Whether for a new job, a special occasion, or simply to brighten your everyday dealings, your dentist recommends tooth whitening to create the perfect, approachable smile.

Why Should I Whiten My Teeth?

People with discolored teeth often lose self-esteem and confidence, but discolored teeth are a universal issue. Even with optimum oral health practices, teeth still lose their whiteness over time as our tooth enamel thins and the inner layer of darker dentin begins to show through. There are a variety of causes and risk factors for stained teeth. Below are listed several of the main reasons teeth stain quickly.

  • Tobacco Use
  • Gum Disease
  • Dark Drinks Like Coffee
  • Simple Aging
  • Antibiotic Use
  • Simple Genetics
  • Over-Use of Fluoride
  • Degeneration of Nerves
  • Lack of Oral Hygiene

For your specific needs, Burnaby Heights Dental Centre offers several whitening options:

  • In-Office Whitening: Our in-office teeth whitening treatments whiten your teeth quickly with prescription-strength hydrogen peroxide. In-office whitening typically requires one to three appointments, depending on the amount of tooth staining. You may schedule in-office whitening appointments at your discretion, whenever you feel your teeth could use a brightening.

How Does Laser Teeth Whitening Work?
The laser energy heats the hydrogen peroxide whitening agent. This helps ensure that whitening is completed as quickly as possible, without pain or damage to the surrounding gums. With Sapphire arch laser lamp, we can complete a full whitening procedure, lightening teeth by 4-6 shades, in just 30 minutes of treatment. This is faster than other in-office whitening systems and allows patients to get quickly get back to daily life, with a much brighter smile.

  • Home Whitening with Bleaching Trays: Your Burnaby Heights Dental Centre dentist is able to take an impression of your mouth and provide you with custom-fitted bleaching trays, so that you can whiten between dental treatments. We recommend a protocol that combines in-office bleaching for start, to initiate the bleaching process of your teeth, followed and supported by at-home bleaching. Then a repeat of in-office bleaching. This is the way that most cases are brought to their optimal bleached shade. Firstly, we have to determine whether or not your existing fillings and other dental work will allow you to start the bleaching process. The sensitivity that sometimes follows any bleaching procedure is due to existing dental issues which allow the bleaching agent to get closer to the nerves of your teeth and irritate them. So, please don’t use any bleaching agents without first getting advice from a dental professional. We are committed to benefitting you and your esthetic needs but always respecting your oral health needs.

  • Over-the-Counter Teeth Whitening Products: Drugstore bleaching kits come with pre-loaded, one-size fits all bleaching strips. With such a multitude of bleaching products on the market, we like to recommend Opalescence products prescription-strength formula of 10% or 15% hydrogen peroxide, which delivers quick results, and contains fluoride to strengthen teeth as they whiten.

Whitening treatments only affect the natural tooth surface. After an intense whitening process, your existing crowns, fillings, or veneers may need to be lightened. Your dentist is happy to discuss creating replacement structures to match your brilliant new smile.
